Eminent Tai scholar Bimal Borpatra Gohain’s demise mourned: Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: Siu-Ka-Pha Award winning eminent Tai scholar and historian, Bimal Borpatra Gohain passed away at AMCH, Dibrugarh on November 19. He was 88 and had been ailing for some time.

Born at Darikial village of Silakuti mouza in 1930, Borpatra Gohain had his school education in Nazira and was an alumnus of JB College, Jorhat. He began his teaching career at Tengapukhuri High School and later joined Simaluguri High School as a science teacher and retired from the school in 1990. Gohain was credited with pioneering and uplift of the Tai language.

He founded the Simaluguri Tai Language Teaching Centre in 1980 and was a founder member of the Purbanchaliya Tai Sahitya Sabha. He took keen interest in reviving the Tai language in Assam and in making Tai scripture and alphabets in foundries in Pune, Maharashtra.

He was a prolific writer in Tai language and had penned a number of important Tai books and Tai grammar which includes Um Ra Krim Tai Ahomiya, Sum pha Rum Seng Maung, Lik Peng Khrim Tai Ahom, Jon Ming Le Len Mai, Phuralung and Ahom Bhashar Nidarkhan aru Deu Buranji.

The Directorate of Culture, Government of Assam, honoured him with the Siu-Ka-Pha Award and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had on January 2, 2017 handed over the prestigious award to him on the Siu-Ka-Pha Divas in historic Tipam. His last rites were performed at Ramugaon, Simaluguri in the presence of thousands of people on Tuesday. He leaves behind two daughters, two sons and a host of relatives. His death was mourned by Purbanchaliya Tai Xahitya Xabha, Sivasagar Zila Xahitya Xabha, State Power Minister Tapan Gogoi, Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition, and Jogen Mohan, MLA of Mahmora.
