“English Vinglish” Actor Sujata Kumar (The Fighter) Passed Away

Sujata Kumar; the Indian film; and television actress took her last breath on Sunday after battling with fourth stage cancer in Mumbai. Her sister, actor and singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi declared the news in a post on Twitter. According to some entertainment portals, she was only 53 years old.

Sujata Kumar’s best-known role is Manu, the sister of Sridevi’s character Shashi in Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish (2012). She has also acted in the films like Gori Tere Pyar Mein (2013) and Raanjhanaa (2013).

She was featured in television series such as Hotel Kingston (2005), Bombay Talking (2005), 24 (2013) and POW: Bandi Yuddh Ke (2016-17).

Before the release of English Vinglish, Sujata Kumar said in an interview that she made her acting debut late in life: “I had my portfolio done and began modelling. I had friends in the media who put me on to production houses.”

Sujata had a painful life. She grew up in a dysfunctional family, where she was abused and also sexually harassed during her teenage. Her married life wasn’t good either. She got divorced from her husband. However, she battled throughout. She expressed all of this in her TEDx Talk this year. During the talk titled as, “How to filter emotional pollutants from your life” she bared her heart out to let people know the truth behind her screen presence. Even though the shock and grief of having cancer struck her, she battled until her last breath.

Confirming the news of Sujata’s death, her sister Suchitra Krishnamoorthi tweeted, “Our beloved Sujata Kumar has passed away and moved on to a better place leaving us with an unimaginable void. She left us an hour ago at 11.26 pm on the 19th of August 2018...Life can never be the same again...”

Sujata's sister, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is a model cum actor. She has acted in television series Chunauti {around 1987–88} while she was a school-going child. She performed in the production of Peanuts: The Musical, which was based on the famous comic strip Peanuts. She played the role of Lucy, in it.

Prior to this, Suchitra took it to the Twitter, asking fans to pray for her best friend and her darling Sujata Kumar was battling for her life in the ICU. She wrote, “It feels like somebody's plunged a hard cold knife into my heart & ripped the ground from under my feet as I sit outside ICU & pray for my big sis my mother my best friend my darling Sujata Kumar as she battles for her life inside Pls join me & my family in prayers for her.”
