LAKHIMPUR: Though the rainy season is still to set in, the water level of major rivers in Lakhimpur district has risen gradually due to continuous shower in the district as well as Arunachal Pradesh. Simultaneously, the water level of the mighty Brahmaputra has also risen and has caused massive erosion in several parts under Dhakuakhana subdivision of the district.

At present, the erosion caused by the Mahabahu has hit Baghchuk, Modarguri and Jogisuti under Dhakuakhana Gaon Panchayat of the subdivision. Erosion has been going on at Baghchuk since 5-6 days, causing panic among the riverine people. Several hectares of agricultural land and farmhouses have been eroded away by the mighty river during the period. The local people said that the river has continued its devastation by eroding 60-70 feet area daily.

“If the erosion continuous like this, the river will take longer time to adjust to the Ekaria Suti which is just flowing by the Chichi-Tekeliphuta embankment. If this happens, the rising surge of the Brahmaputra will pose a threat to the newly-constructed embankment in the rainy season”, stated the local people.

No responsible personnel, neither from Dhakuakhana Water Resource Division nor Dhakuakhana subdivisional administration, has yet visited the erosion-affected areas. Mising Autonomous Council chairman Sunil Doley inspected the affected areas on Monday and witnessed the devastation.

“There is no fund and schemes with Dhakuakhana WRD Division in order to initiate any erosion-prevention measures at present. Under such circumstances, the Mising Autonomous Council must implement some scheme to mitigate the problem. But the model code of conduct enforced for the parliamentary poll has disrupted the implementation of new schemes,” he remarked while inspecting the area.

On the other hand, the local people have demanded to implement erosion-prevention measures in the affected areas immediately. Information about the devastation caused by erosion has been, meanwhile, imparted to Dhakuakhana MLA and State P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley.
