Dibrugarh: Irab Kirab, an environmental education centre, observed the World Environment Day amidst many events at the Milan Jyoti Sangha. On the occasion, an essay writing competition was held among the students from many places, including Dibrugarh, Chabua and Khowang. The event was started with a one-minute silence in memory of the first coordinator of Irab Kirab, Popi Santana Bharali. The topic of the essay-writing competition was, ‘Role of insects in the conservation of environment’. Along with that, speech delivery competition was also held on different topics closely associated with environment and ecology.
Gracing the occasion as a special guest, former Professor of the Department of Life Science, Dibrugarh University, Dr. Pradip Kumar Baruah, gave a detailed talk on many relevant issues like the possible threat of the growing human population on the biodiversity. Former Professor of Dibru College, Dr. Chandragupta Bora spoke elaborately on the role of students in reducing the increasing menace of air pollution. Among the eminent personalities who judged the competitions included former Junior Scientist of Indian Health Research Centre, Basanta Kumar Goswami and former Forest Ranger Soumendra Saikia.
