FACAAB congratulates ethnic  bodies opposing amendment Bill

GUWAHATI, April 19:  Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill (FACAAB) has through a press release congratulated 16 ethnic groups of Assam for having vehemently opposed the Citizenship Act (Amendment) Bill- 2016 at the hearing on the same held by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC ) in New Delhi on April 17. Significantly, as per the Forum press release, the ethnic groups have collectively issued a release clearly stating their staunch opposition to the Bill before the JPC. 

The Forum has welcomed the view of the ethnic bodies which have in their release stated that the Bill is a conspiracy against the people of Assam and hence be withdrawn immediately. The view of the ethnic groups that under no circumstances the cut-off date to determinf foreigners in Assam as laid down in the Assam Accord as midnight of March 24, 1971 would be allowed to be scrapped or diluted has also been whole heartedly welcomed by the Forum.

The FACAAB has also asserted that it would take all measures to  honour the 855 martyrs who laid down their lived during the historic Assam Movement.

On the other hand, basing its views on newspaper reports, the Forum has vehemently condemned the action of the Axom Xatra Mahasabha (AXM) which has, in its language, played a role utterly destructive to the interests of the people of Assam by not opposing the Bill and allegedly siding with the BJP and the RSS.  The Forum has demanded of the AXM to clarify its stand in the Bill, failing which the Mahasabha will have to face an extremely tough  situation and the Faorum may even go the extent of branding the Satra body as anti-Assam.

As per the Forum release the ethnic organizations that opposed the Bill at the hearing in New Delhi on April 17 are All  Assam Tribal Sangha, All Bodo Students’ Union, All Mising Students’ Union, All Rabha Students’ Union,  All Tiwa Students’ Union, All Moran Students’ Union, All Dimasa Students’ Union, All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union, All Assam Karbi Students’ Association, All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association, All Assam Deuri Students’ Union, All Assam Goria Moria Desi Jatiya Parishad, All Assam Hajong Chatra Santha and All India Karbi Students’ Association.
