Family of murdered woman threatens self-immolation

SIVASAGAR, April 1: Parents, brothers and sisters of Simi Begum, who was allegedly brutally killed by her husband Toufique Sah and father-in-law Sahidur Sah, staged a protest at Dolmukh Chariali in Sivasagar town on Tuesday afternoon demanding arrest of the culprit. They also threatened to set themselves afire if police failed to arrest the murderer within six days.

The protest has drawn lot of interest because of its uniqueness, and the police faced a harrowing time as Simi Begum’s father Babul Ali tried to slit his throat with a knife. He was saved by the efforts of the public and media persons present there.

The family was holding placards demanding justice and arrest of the murder-accused, threatened to commit suicide through self-immolation, if police failed to arrest Sahidur Sah within six days. The murder occurred on the road in front of Simi Begum’s mother’s house at Mornoi Kir on January 5. Her husband Toufique Sah and father–in–law Sahidur Sah, allegedly repeatedly stabbed Simi on her neck, chest and lower part of the belly. She died on the way to the hospital. Simi, eldest daughter of Babul Ali and Fatema Begum of Mornoi Kir, married Toufique Sah of Ulutoli gaon of Mornoi Kir on April 22, 2014.

Though Toufique Sah was arrested, his father Sahidur Sah has not been arrested. Sahidur Sah, a lot mondol in Sivasagar Revenue Circle, is being protected by a powerful group, alleged Simi’s parents.
