Festive Season Exposes Poor Traffic Management

A Correspondent

Dibrugarh: The problem of traffic congestion in the town, though reported many times before, continues to trouble people. And, with the ongoing rush for puja shopping, this ailment has taken the centre stage. The traffic snarl is at its peak at the RKB Path, as it is the most used road by the people going to New Market for shopping.

Moreover, the fact that a large portion of the road has been carved out for parking has only compounded the problem. On normal days, with the lesser crowd on the streets, the situation, although lamentable, seems to be somewhat under control. But, on festive seasons, the issue shows up its ugliest head. The failure of certain shopping complexes located in the prominent areas to provide adequate parking facilities, a prerequisite for efficient urban town planning, has also contributed to the pitiful situation. That the town needs a dedicated parking lot in the vicinity of the market area is something known to all the authorities concerned, yet it fails to garner the attention it direly needs.

In such a backdrop, one cannot help but picture the time when, after the completion of the Bogibeel bridge, people from places like Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Arunachal Pradesh would travel to Dibrugarh even more frequently and probably, in larger numbers. If the status quo doesn’t undergo a significant transition, will the situation not spiral out of control?
