Financial Crunch

Financial Crunch

It emerges from the reports in the print media that the Government of Assam is encumbered with a loan of Rs 56, 861.90 crore. It further emerges that the government took an additional loan of Rs 21, 171.68 crore. It may be mentioned here that 10% of the budget has to be repaid by way of repayment of loan. The entire works of development of the deplorable infrastructure of the State have received a severe setback as a result of the burgeoning burden of loans.

Assam, as we know, is a resourceful State. But many corrupt officials of almost all the departments of the State embezzle money with impunity. While some of the small fish are caught, the big guns escape scot-free. Once we used to think of the Congress as being synonymous with corruption, but it seems that the BJP, too, is sparing no pains to outshine the Congress.

The syndicate raj goes on unabated, despite stern warnings by the Chief Minister. The irregularities that go on in departments like forest, rural development, and social welfare, to name just a few, are also contributing to the worsening of the financial position of the State.

The only solution left with the State government is to nab all the culprits, including the corrupt government officials. Confiscating their properties would definitely ease the financial crunch.
