Five young girls will represent Assam in Asian Games 2018

Five young and graceful Assamese women aged between 18 and 28 will now represent Assam in the ongoing Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta and their photograph has already created excitement across social media. The names of these young female participants in Asian Games 2018 are Ashmita Chaliha (Badminton), Pramila Daimary (Archery), Kabita Devi (Fencing), Rodali Baruah (Taekwondo) and Hima Das (Athletics).

Pabitra Ram Khound, Director, Sports and Youth Welfare Dept, Government of Assam said, “This is probably the first time Assam has such a big contingent and it’s admirable that there are five girls”.

Khound further added, “In the past few years, the ambiance for sports in Assam has developed. Unlike before, sports are now being pursued as a serious professional career,”

Ashmita Chaliha (badminton)

Chaliha, who is 18 years old, won the All India Senior Ranking Tournament in Hyderabad previously this year. She obtained her place in the Asian Games badminton squad among heavyweights like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. She hails from Guwahati and her first match is scheduled on August 20.

Promila Daimary (archery)

Daimary bagged a gold in March 2018, at the (recurve) Asia Cup World Ranking Archery Tournament in Bangkok. Earlier she has represented India at the Mexico Hyundai World Archery Champions and the Berlin Hyundai Archery World Cup Stage 4, in 2017. She is 21 years old and she comes from a village in Udalguri district, Assam. Her first game is scheduled for August 23.

Kabita Devi (fencing)

Kabita Devi earned the bronze medal in the Senior National Fencing Championship held at Raipur, Chattisgarh in 2017. She had participated in the Asian fencing championship held at Bangkok. She is 28 year old and she is from Silchar. Her first game is scheduled for August 21.

Rodali Barua (taekwondo)

Rodali Baruah is a world black belt champion in Taekwondo who participated on behalf of India at the World Taekwondo Championships in Korea in June 2017. She bagged a gold at the 35th National Senior Kyorugi and 8th National Senior Pumche Taekwondo Championships held at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. She is 22 years old and she is from Tezpur. Her first game is scheduled for August 21.

Hima Das (athletics)

Regarded as the “sprint queen” of Assam, Hima Das gained widespread acclaim with her historic win at the IAAF World Under 20 Championship 2018, in Tampere, Finland last month. She also participated in Commonwealth Games 2018. She is 18 years and she hails from Nagaon. Das, who will be competing both in 200m and 400m races and her first event is scheduled for August 26.

Shiva Thapa, who is also an Olympian, is the only boy from Assam who will compete in Asian Games 2018 in Jakarta.
