Flood fury on,  as usual this time too

GUWAHATI, June 18: Floods on Monday claimed two more lives in the State taking the death toll to 14 on the fifth day of the first spate of floods and accompanying landslides even as the water level of the mighty Brahmaputra saw a receding trend.

Despite the receding trend of water of the Brahmaputra, more areas have been inundated as many of the tributaries and rivers are still flowing the above the danger level. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the rivers Dhansiri, Barak, Kushihara and Katakhal are still flowing above the danger level.

The first spate of floods has badly affected six districts —Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimgang. Even though there has been slight improvement of flood in central Assam, the situation in Barak Valley still remains grim. Floods claimed one life each in Cachar and Hailakandi district on Monday.

The total number of affected population has risen to 5,48,986 in 719 number of villages in six districts. Crop areas have been also affected in the floods in Nagaon and Morigaon districts. Altogether 1,59,652 inmates are currently staying at 225 relief camps and 212 relief distribution centres set up by the State Government in different districts.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday took stock of the flood situation of Karimganj district and directed the Deputy Commissioner to speed up relief-and-rescue operations. Sonowal, while reviewing the flood situation, over phone also asked the DC to immediately release the one-time financial assistance to the family members of the flood victims. He laid stress on ensuring adequate relief to the inmates of flood relief camps and directed the Karimganj district administration to remain alert to tackle any situation.

On the other hand, normal running of train has been restored in Lumding-Badarpur and Badapur-Agartala sections after completion of restoration work following heavy landslides. But traffic is still suspended between Silchar and Badarpur as some portion of the railway track at Km 8/7-9/1 between Panchgram and Katakhal stations is still under flood water.
