Flood in Golaghat, Victim Demands Compensation

GOLAGHAT: Due to increase in water level of Dhansiri and Dayang rivers, as many as 24,346 people of 69 villages and 1209 hectares of agricultural land have been affected by flood in Golaghat district till Wednesday. Without any prior notice to the public, the Hydro-electrical Power Project over Doyang river of NEEPCO has been releasing its excess water through four radial gates of the project due to which most of the villages in Sarupathar, Merapani, Morangi, Golaghat and Khumtai revenue circles of Golaghat district have been submerged by flood water. In the meantime, the All Golaghat District Students’ Union, under the leadership of president in-charge Mridul Saikia and secretary Abhibartan Goswami, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding adequate compensation for the flood victims. They also threatened that if the administration did not take immediate action, they would launch massive protest against NEEPCO.
