Floods hit Hailakandi district, Tasla embankment breached

Hailakandi, June 13: Following breach in embankment at Tasla, Nimaichandpur has been hit by flood with scores of people affected. Katakhal River has been in spate following torrential rainfall in the catchment areas for the past couple of days. Eight villages have been fully affected while 50 partially hit. The breach at Tasla embankment on Tuesday has hit Nimaichandpur, Nityanandapur, Sudarshanpur and Bandukmara. Surface communication has been snapped between Sudarshanpur Part III to Nityanandapur as the approach road of the bridge near Kalacherra has been washed away. Around one km of the road is inundated by surging flood waters.

Executive Engineer, PWD (Rural Roads), Hailakandi Division, RA Choudhury disclosed that two-km of NH-154 up to Lala town has been submerged with one culvert washed away and several others partially damaged. Altogether nine PWD roads have been submerged across the district. Officials of the district administration and heads of departments concerned are camping in the affected areas overseeing the relief operation. Additional SDRF teams have been pressed into service for rescue work. Even Assam Rifles has been kept on standby to deal with any exigency. Two rubber boats from SDRF have been pressed into service at Katlicherra and one at Lala. Four more boats from NDRF are on the way.

Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan said the administration would leave no stone unturned in ensuring safety and security of the people and in carrying out relief and rehabilitation operations in the flood-hit areas. Health and Family Welfare, Public Health Engineering and Social Welfare departments are working round-the-clock to provide basic amenities to the affected people. The police are providing security to the affected people living in camps as well as in the flood-prone areas. Sixteen relief camps have been opened up by the district administration to provide shelter to the flood-hit people. Medical teams have been despatched from district headquarters and nearby areas to the affected places.
