Food for thought

The results of the general elections are out and Narendra Modi is back with a lot of grace. His humbleness at the hour of his victory has been remarkable. But what is striking is the lack of it in some leaders from the Opposition front, which has been virtually decimated. Let us not forget that elections are about victories and defeats but it is humility or humbleness – acceptance of the people’s verdict, whatever it is in whichever way – that defines one’s personality. This is especially important in a democracy, in which the will of the people reigns supreme, and therefore, whatever they decide has to be accepted; there is no other option. Some Congress leaders seem to be incapable of realizing it, and the same is true of leaders like Mamta Banerjee.

In fact, all of this art of accepting whatever is in life – its many ups and downs and the art of profiting from experience – has much to do with the character of a person. It is the one who is strong enough to accept defeat or failure, and thus willing to learn from past mistakes, who makes a mark in life. This has much to do with taking responsibility in the first place – 100 per cent responsibility for one’s actions, and not passing the buck on others. One’s life is one’s own business and there is, therefore, none who can help you unless you help yourself in the first place – both personally and professionally.

The eminent success guru Jack Canfield, in his international bestseller How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, says, “If you want to create a life of your dreams, then you are going to have to take 100% responsibility for your life as well. That means giving up all your excuses, all your victim stories, all the reasons why you can’t and why you haven’t up until now, and all blaming of outside circumstances. You have to give them all up forever.”

Well, will the defeated leaders in the general elections learn that lesson and grow up, especially the Congress chief?
