Former BJP loyalist Baliram Boro assails party for anti-tribal’, ‘anti-indigenous’ stand

TANGLA: In a complete turnaround, former BJP loyalist, Baliram Boro, a resident of Dighali under Dhupdhara PS in Goalpara, who contested the assembly polls on a BJP ticket from the Dudhnoi seat in Goalpara district and claimed to be associated with the BJP since 1990, joined the Indian National Congress at Rajiv Bhavan, Mangaldai in Darrang district on April 13.

Addressing a press meet on Monday at the Congress Bhavan, Tangla on Monday, Boro lambasted the saffron party and alleged that the party had always adopted an ‘anti-tribal and anti-indigenous’ stand. Boro said that the adamant stand of the BJP of passing the contentious CAB had made him join the Congress under the able leadership of veteran politician Bhubaneswar Kalita who had stood with the people of Assam in the hour of crisis. Boro said that only such a leader could take the voice of the indigenous people to New Delhi.

Boro, while making a scathing attack on the saffron party, said in every tribal autonomous council, the saffron party had saffronized the leaders of the councils by making them join the BJP or luring them to support the BJP. Former Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Rama Kanta Deuri, who is the present MLA of Morigaon, is such an example. Even Tankeswar Rabha, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Rabha Autonomous Council, was offered a BJP ticket which he denied and the ticket was then offered to one of his trusted aides. Boro even alleged that the BJP had a nexus with Independent candidate of Kokrajhar HPC, Naba Sarania alias Hira, and was secretly supporting him instead of BJP-BPF-AGP alliance candidate Pramila Rani Brahma.

Replying to a question on why he decided to join the Congress, Boro said, “I have joined the Congress to save the tribals from the BJP’s anti-tribal stance and to save them from the tyrannical rule of the BJP.” He also claimed that the CAB issue would make the Congress win more than eight seats in the parliamentary polls. The press meet was also attended by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) general secretary Jonali Burhagohain and Executive Member of APCC, Satyarani Kalita.
