Former Lakhimpur MLA Ghana Burhagohain Re-Joins Congress

LAKHIMPUR: Former Congress MLA of No. 111 Lakhimpur LAC, Ghana Burhagohain came back to the party. On Sunday, his party supporters were seen rejoicing. Burhagohain re-joined the party, three years after he was suspended. The former MLA re-joined the party on December 29 at Rajiv Bhavan in Guwahati, in the presence of APCC president Ripun Borah, Opposition leader Debabrat Saikia, senior Congress leader Bishnu Prashad and former minister Sarat Barkataki. Then he called on Harish Rawat, the in-charge of Assam Congress, on January 8 and returned to Lakhimpur on Sunday. Hundreds of his supporters received him from the Ranganadi Bridge on the way to Lakhimpur, giving him hero’s welcome. They took him to Lakhimpur Rajiv Bhavan, shouting slogans in support of him and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC president Ripun Borah. He addressed a party meeting at Rajiv Bhavan.

The former MLA was suspended from the Congress after he had contested against the party’s candidate in the last assembly election after being deprived of party ticket. In the meeting, he said that he was deprived of the ticket, not by the party but because of the conspiracy hatched by a few party leaders, thereby forcing him to contest in the assembly election independently. He publicly criticized the present Lakhimpur District Congress (LDCC) president alleging his involvement in cash transaction regarding the selection of party candidates for the recent panchayat poll. The LDCC president was not present when Ghana Burhagohain arrived in Lakhimpur on Sunday.
