Four People’s Democratic Party (PDF) MDCs Resign from Party, Shillong

SHILLONG: The squabbles within the People’s Democratic Party (PDF) have led to the resignation of four of its MDC in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday. The four MDCs include Latiplang Kharkongor, James Sylliang, Blanding Warjri and Grace Mary Kharpuri.

It may be mentioned that earlier the three MDCs of the PDF (Kharkongor, Sylliang and Warjri) were suspended from the party as they had extended their support to the Executive Committee of KHADC led by HS Shylla.

The resignation was submitted to the president and general secretary of the party and a copy was also sent to the chairman of the PDF PN Syiem.

Speaking to reporters, Kharkongor said, “We have taken this decision to resign from the party because we feel that many members within the party are only thinking about their own self-interest.”

He said that despite the fact that their suspension had ended earlier this month, however, they have yet to receive any official communication from the party concerning their present standing within the party.

“Even on the day we were suspended we came to know from the newspapers and the party had not even communicated with us on the reason for taking the decision to suspend us,” he said. When asked, he informed that all the four MDCs will remain as independent within the KHADC and will only take a decision to join other political parties after discussions with their supporters. He informed despite a sub-committee which was constituted in which all the four MLAs of the party are members tasked with the objective to find solutions and suggestions to problems within the party, however, all the three recently suspended MDCs have not received a communication from the committee.
