SHILLONG, April 21: Residents of Jaiaw and Wahingdoh locality on Saturday received free gas connection through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme at a function held at Wahingdoh Community hall.

The scheme was distributed to 19 beneficiaries through the Khasi Pnar Gas Agency in the presence of secretary and headmen of Jaiaw, Mission Compound, Umsohsun and Wahingdoh. Also present on the occasion was North Shillong constituency legislator Adelbert Nongrum who graced the function as the chief guest.

Speaking at the function, proprietor of the gas agency RL Blah said there are 51 beneficiaries who are entitled to avail the scheme. However, due to server problems only 19 files were able to be processed as 15, 000 places across the country are simultaneously distributing free gas connection to people under the BPL category, he added.  He said those who are yet to receive the free gas connection should not worry as their files had been processed and would soon get their gas stoves and cylinders. "Earlier, only rich families could afford to cook food using Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

However, through this scheme people who have been using charcoal or wood to cook their food will now enjoy the benefit of cooking through LPG," Blah said.

Meanwhile, in his short speech, Adelbert Nongrum said, "Through this scheme many households will be benefitted as cooking will be faster and hassle-free. Besides, health issues will also reduce from the cut in the use of charcoal and wood while cooking. This will also help the environment to a great extent."

Nongrum said the beneficiaries should be glad to avail the benefits through this scheme.
