"Freedom To Choice", Says AR Rahman On Daughter Wearing A Niqaab

Oscar-winning musician AR Rahman was recently criticised for his daughter Khatija Rahman wearing a niqaab as she interviewed him on Slumdog Millionaire’s 10th anniversary. Khatija has currently reacted to the criticism, stressing the freedom to make her own choices.

She shared a detailed post on Facebook that reads, “I would really like to mention that the apparel I wear or the choices I make in my life doesn't have anything to do with my parents. The veil has been my personal selection with complete acceptance and honour. I'm a sane mature adult who is aware of to make my decisions in life.”

AR Rahman, too, shared an image showing his other daughter Raheema and his wife Sairaa without the veil however Khatija covering her face at a celebration. He captioned it, “The precious ladies of my family Khatija, Raheema and Sairaa with NitaAmbaniji #freedomtochoose.”

The singer was criticised on the social media by users accusing him of forcing his daughter to wear a veil. A user wrote, “Proud of his music. Ashamed of his imposition of a medieval tyranny to his new age daughter. Saree and veil don’t go together, they stand for exactly opposition ideas. Saree celebrates womanhood. Burqa/ veil subdues it 10 feet under.”

The fans of the singer came out in his support soon after. A user reacted, “Have you ever debated over why a celebrity’s daughter stood next to her dad in a cleavage poppin’ bodycon, or distastefully draped saree? Did her father ask her to dress like that? Social churning and cultural conditioning much? Jokers. #freedomtochoose”

Recently, Khatija Rahman, the daughter of Oscar-winning Indian music director A.R. Rahman, says that she is proud of her father not only because of his musical achievements worldwide but also about the values he has inculcated in her as a father. On the occasion of the 10-year celebration of the music of “Slumdog Millionaire” that won eight awards at the Oscars including Best Original Score by A.R. Rahman, Khatija became emotional and praised her father.

Khatija Rahman said “Though the world knows you for your music and the award that you won, I have immense love and respect for you because of the values they taught us (three of his children). Your humility matters the most for me. Not an atom of your character has changed ever since you won the Oscar, nothing has changed in you in the last 10 years except the time you spend with us has reduced. I think you are making it up now by taking us on short trips!”
