GUWAHATI, Aug 14: The case of fox guarding the henhouse – a foreigner engaged in the verification of documents submitted by NRC applicants – in the State is heading for a logical end. Primary school teacher Khairul Islam of Morigaon district, who was engaged in NRC work, is heading for the detention camp with the Gauhati High Court upholding the Morigaon Foreigners Tribunal’s (FT) order declaring him as a foreigner.

The Morigaon district administration has already relieved Islam from NRC work recently when it came to know from media reports that he had been declared a foreigner by Morigaon FT. It happens only in Assam – foreigners becoming legislators, getting government jobs and even getting involved in duties as sacred as that of NRC.

Morigaon district administration had been under the presumption that Khairul was on bail obtained from the Gauhati High Court. It was made to believe that Khairul’s case {WP © 5232/2016} was sub judice in the high court. However, of late it has come to light that the high court disposed of the case way back on June 13, 2018. The newer facts regarding Khairul have put Morigaon district administration in troubled waters. The Morigaon police is yet to get the high court’s order declaring Khairul as a foreigner, officially. According to rules, Khairul Islam should be sent to the detention camp. Talking to The Sentinel, Morigaon SP Swapnanil Deka said: “We’ll send Khairul Islam to the detention camp as and when we receive the order from the Gauhati High Court, officially.”

Khairul’s is a shocking tale. He was an assistant teacher of Tengshali Khundapukhuri Prathamik Vidyalaya in Morigaon district. On the merit of being a teacher, he was engaged in NRC duty in the NRC Seva Kendra at Mikirbheta in Morigaon district. However, the latest development concerning his nationality does raise a question: can one rely on the NRC documents declared ok by him, a foreigner?

Khirul Islam has two other siblings, and both the FT and the high court declared all of them as foreigners. It was in Morigaon district where the names of 200 declared foreigners and doubtful voters along with their descendents had made it to the complete draft NRC. The district administration was compelled to delete all those names from the draft NRC.
