Full-steam poll campaigning on East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency

A Correspondent

Agartala: Campaigning for the East Tripura Lok Sabha constituency has reached at its peak with Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb organizing public meetings and road shows in different parts of the constituency and State Congress president and a royal scion Pradyot Kishor Debbarman fielded his mother Maharani Bibhu Kumari Devi to add glitter to the campaign for his sister Pragya Debbarman who is the Congress candidate in the constituency.

Though not a very well-known figure, BJP candidate Rebati Tripura backed by the glamour of the Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and organisational efficiency of his party is effectively outshining the glitters of Tripura’s royal trio and. The sitting MP from this constituency, Jitendra Choudhury, who is contesting the election this time also as a CPI(M) candidate, seems to be finding it difficult to counter his glamorous rivals. In absence of any star campaigner, he is virtually running a lone battle.

Polling for this constituency was supposed to be held on April 18 but was rescheduled by the Election Commission following reports expressing doubt about disturbances. Additional security arrangements are also being taken. The EC decision ignited a controversy about who was responsible for deterioration of the law and order situation. The BJP, Congress and CPI(M) were accusing one another. No doubt the ruling BJP was in the receiving end of this political controversy but the Chief Minister’s road show on Friday at Kumarghat and Ambassa amply speaks that the people are hardly concerned about it. Juxtaposing to it the royal trio’s appeal appears to be much less which was further diminished following an incident when Pradyot Bikram entered into the Khowai police station and slapped one person.
