Fully prepared for panchayat polls: Assam BJP

Guwahati, July 5 : The Assam unit of the BJP wants the holding of the panchayat polls in the state at the earliest. This has been stated by Assam state BJP general secretary Dilip Saikia while addressing the press in Rangmahal at Maligaon in Guwahati today.

It may be recalled that earlier the Gauhati High Court had instructed the Assam Government to hold the panchayat polls within September, 2018. Simultaneously, several parties and bodies have been alleging that the BJP is not interested in holding the panchayat polls in the State.

Refuting the allegation, Dilip Saikia said that the BJP wants decentralization of powers to the grass root level and that the party and the government are committed in this regard. Adding that the BJP desires development in the villages through the process of decentralization of powers, he said that the party called on the State Election Commissioner several times and urged him to hold the panchayat polls at the earliest.

He further said that the Centre during the last four years and the State Government during the last two years initiated several rural development schemes and that successful implementation of the same has led to development in rural areas. Stating that the BJP would achieve grand success whenever the panchayat polls are held and Saikia said that for the purpose of the panchayat polls the party has constituted a policy making committee which will take the needful decision in the matter of panchayat polls, adding that it would also lead to encouragement of 29 lakh workers of the party in the state. On the other hand, since July 2 organisational meetings of various morchas of the BJP have been in progress at Maligaon in the city and on Thursday the meeting of the ST Morcha of the State BJPwas held.

Attending the meeting, state BJP president Ranjit Dass said that since the ST people are with the BJP, the KAAC, NCHAC, Tiwa Autonomous Council, Dewri Autonomous Council, Sonowal-Kachari Autonomous Council, THengal-Kachari Autonomous Council are with the BJP. He further said that the BTAD, Rabha-Hasong and Mising autonomous councils are controlled by the alliance parties of the BJP.

In the matter of welfare schemes for the ST, Dass said that the government has initiated several schemes for their and that the workers are to shoulder a lot more of responsibility and that the same would be done. He also urged the workers to prepare themselves for the coming Lok Sabha and panchayat polls.
