Garbage disposal erratic in city area

Guwahati, June 22: With the monsoon approaching fast, the shopkeepers in and around Dispur Secretariat are alarmed as the roads have become mud-caked with rain causing havoc in the area. Although, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has installed dustbins in various corners near Last Gate, the employees of GMC hardly clean them up. Eventually, the irregular disposal of garbage and cleaning of the dustbins are altogether contributing to foul odour in the area.

Talking to The Sentinel, some shopkeepers in the Super Market area have said that the number of residents in the area increased, so did the number of shopkeepers. Apparently, the street vendors have started occupying the footpath for selling vegetables, meat and fish. “Despite being aware of the situation, GMC is yet to step up precautionary measures in the area,” a shopkeeper said. Hence, the GMC’s unpreparedness or lackadaisical attitude has compounded the trouble being faced by the shopkeepers in the area.
