Gauhati University to tighten security inside campus

GUWAHATI: The molestation incident of a Gauhati University law student sparked a protest in the university with GU Law Students’ Union demanding justice and security of the campus. A meeting of the union with senior police officers was arranged on Friday, where the internal security of the campus was discussed at length.

President of the union Shubhra Jyoti Das informed that security arrangements of the university campus was discussed, where assurance was provided that within seven days, all the broken CCTVs and street lamps will be repaired and new CCTVs and lamps will also be installed. “We were assured that a police patrol team will be present inside the campus at all times. We also submitted a memorandum to the VC where certain demands were made.

The Union wants that after 6 pm, all I cards should be thoroughly checked, the entrance made a one-way and no outsiders should be permitted to enter. More CCTVs and better lighting should be arranged in the sensitive areas of the campus. All students, faculty members and employees of GU should be provided with a vehicle pass and entry cards or tokens should be provided for pedestrians entering the campus. These tokens should be submitted in the gate after the visit is over”, Das said.
