Silchar, June 30: “Girl students are doing well in their studies and examinations. They have to shine and aim high to achieve the set goal to become self-reliant and a good citizen of the country”, said MLA Rajdeep Goala. He was addressing the students of Jogai Mathura High School, located at Binnakandi Ghat, in the Lakhipur sub division of Cachar, 30 km from here on the occasion of distribution of bicycles to 66 girl students of BPL families. Continuing, Rajdeep Goala at the same time advised the girls in mind to conduct themselves in their everyday life in a decent and dignified manner to see that the fair name of 50 year old institution is kept flying high. This will be a matter of pride for the society and people around.

The School which has produced a good number of brilliant students and stood the wear and tear of time has also to withstand the fury of nature, being located in a cyclonic area. Two years ago, the institution was hit by a devastating cyclone which badly damaged the building and its infrastructure. Desks, benches and tables as well as blackboards came under its spell, forcing suspension of classes for a few days. Though MP Sushmita Dev allocated Rs 3 lakh from her MP area development fund, it was quite insufficient to repair the damages. Rajdeep Goala assured of further help from his development fund for the construction of cycle shed for girls.

The MLA said this high school needs to be upgraded to higher secondary level and on this matter he would talk to Education Minister. The issue of heavy erosion of the neighbouring cluster of villages, Singerband, came up and Rajdeep Goala said he had a talk with the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during his recent visit to Silchar. A proposal of Rs.17 crore was taken up for consideration. The Chief Minister was well aware of the serious problem. Moreover, Rajdeep Goala talked to Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Water Resource Department. Before that, he had a meeting with the DONER Minister, Jitendra Singh, about the issue of erosion. Pradip Kumar Gupta, circle officer, was requested by him to personally make an on the spot study of the steps to be taken for necessary repair of the damages to the School.

The function organized on the occasion was presided over by Durga Kanta Pandey, former headmaster of the School. Hemchandra Singha, headmaster, expressed his deepest sense of satisfaction at the visit of Rajdeep Goala and his words of assurance for the improvement of the oldest school of the area which has been catering to the primary and basic needs of education for the students, boys and girls, of different linguistic and ethnic groups, besides tea tribes.
