GUWAHATI, Feb 20: Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has written a letter to Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal on non-allocation of funds in the Annual Budget for Assam Women’s University at Jorhat, Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Magement at Sivasagar and College of Sericulture, Assam Agriculture University at Titabor.

Gogoi said that there are very few women’s universities in the country, and Assam Women’s University at Jorhat is the only women’s university in the entire eastern India. “While the NDA Government talks about giving emphasis on girls’ education under the slogan ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Podhao’ but non-allocation of funds for Assam Women’s University goes against the principle of promoting girls’ education. I hope you will provide adequate funds for Assam Women’s University in this budget,” Gogoi said.

Gogoi further said that Assam is known for endi, muga, pat, silk etc. “In Assam most of the women are involved in silk industry and Assamese weavers produce the most valuable fabric. They are earning their livelihood from handloom industry. In view of this sericulture sector should be given further priority. Therefore, College of Sericulture at Titabar deserves special consideration for allocation of funds,” Gogoi said, and added: “The cooperative movement is very important for all-round development of the state, and it will create employment opportunities. In such a case this Cooperative University deserves special consideration from the government.”
