Google News Initiative holds training camp for scribes

GUWAHATI: The Google News Initiative in partnership with Data Leads and Internews, organized a day-long training for working journalists, media educators and journalism students titled “Poll Check India: Covering India’s Elections” at Shillong on Saturday. The training was conducted in association with the Shillong Press and supported by the Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, Department of Information and Public Relations, Meghalaya and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

Google certified trainers Monjib Mochahari, and Jaikishan SG, assistant professor of Assam Don Bosco University conducted the day long training. This programme is part of a training series to support journalists covering India’s upcoming general elections. The focus of the training was on digital safety and security for journalists, YouTube streaming India’s general elections, photo and verification and how to tackle fake news in India.

At least 70 working journalists, media educators, photographers and journalism students from across Meghalaya participated in the day-long programme.

Since 2016, Google has trained more than 13,000 journalists in India, across 200 newsrooms and in 40 cities. This training is currently being conducted in 30 cities across the country in English, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Gujarati, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi, stated a press release.
