Government approves ordinance on ‘Teer’

Shillong, May 16: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Meghalaya Regulation of Game of Arrow Shooting and Sale of Teer Tickets Ordinance, 2018.

Informing media persons after a Cabinet meeting, Home Minister James K Sangma said that after the coming of Good and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2017 the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax, 1982 have been subsumed under the GST.

According to Sangma, the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax 1982 rules was framed to regulate the game of arrow shooting popularly known as ‘teer’ and the betting that goes on.

“The Act was amended from time to time. With the coming of the GST, the act had to be subsumed. In the absence of an Act to regulate or look into teer and arrow shooting. It was brought to the Cabinet to put in place through an ordinance the Meghalaya Regulation of Game of Arrow Shooting and the Sale of Teer Tickets ordinance 2018,” he said.

This was ordinance has been brought with the intention of bringing in place regulation which regulate betting business in the game of teer. The ordinance will empower the State Govenrment to issue issuing of licenses and regulate the Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that when GST came in, the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax 1982 Act was treated as repealed.

According to Sangma, the revenue generated in the 2014-2015 is Rs 1,01,27,707 and in 2015-2016 it was Rs 1,73,63,124.
