Kokrajhar, May 17: The Government Pensioners’ Association, Kokrajhar District Branch has strongly opposed the move of the Union government to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and demanded that the government must cancel it. In a press statement, the president of the Kokrajhar district branch of Government Pensioners’ Association, Sailadhar Brahma, and secretary Chandan Narzary said the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was unconstitutional and it was against the interest of the Assam Accord, 1985. They said if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed, the indigenous people of the State would suffer in every way, besides facing a threat to their existence, culture and identity. They urged the Government of India to cancel its decision. A memorandum was submitted to the Joint Parliamentary Committee through the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner demanding that the proposed bill be scrapped.
