Itanagar, July 10: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra has called upon the Centre for taking a concrete action to bring peace and development in the eastern part of the state, infested by the insurgency problem.

Expressing his concern over the insurgency activities in eastern Arunachal districts of Tirap, Changlang and Longding, Mishra called for a concrete action to bring peace and development in the region.

The Governor made this plea while taking part in the opening day of two-day 67th plenary session of North Eastern Council (NEC) at Shillong on Monday which was chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Highlighting the potentials and challenges of the frontier state, the Governor also requested the Ministry of Home Affairs, DoNER Ministry and the regional planning body NEC to strengthen the infrastructure at border check posts to promote border trade with the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Kingdom of Bhutan and the People’s Republic of China.

Stating that Arunachal Pradesh is most strategically located in the country, having 1680 km international border with three countries i.e. Bhutan (160 Km), China (1080 Km) and Myanmar (440 Km), the Governor said that the Border Area Development Programme in the State is a national necessity for security and to check thinning out of population.

“Nation has to invest in the border areas so that people of the State are safe and the far-flung land has men & women to fly the national flag,” the Governor said while informing the Home Minister that Arunachal Government has submitted a proposal under BADP and it would need additional package under the programme.

He also put forward the State’s connectivity issues including implementation of 1500-km Trans-Arunachal Highway, Arunachal Frontier Highway and East-West Corridor. While pointing out that Arunachal Pradesh is the lone State in the country which does not have airport in State capital, he emphasized that Civil Aviation Ministry and Ministry of DoNER must fund the much-awaited Itanagar Greenfield airport project at the earliest.

The Governor further requested the NEC and DoNER Ministry for their assistance and participation in tourism, skill development, healthcare and education sectors. To boost education sector in the State, the Governor urged NEC to explore the possibility of establishment of regional important educational institution in Arunachal Pradesh in the same lines of IITs and IIMs, an official release said here on Tuesday.
