Governor’s intervention sought for panchayat polls

Itanagar, July 7: The Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) has submitted a copy of its signature campaign to the Governor, demanding that the panchayat elections be conducted in the state.

The APYC had carried out the signature campaign across the state's rural areas from April 23 last, demanding the Governor's intervention to conduct the polls.

The panchayat elections were due in May this year, but the Pema Khandu government postponed it, citing inclement weather forecast across the state.

The postponement of the elections drew flak from the Congress, which described the decision as "an attempt to put the panchayati raj institution on its death bed for selfish interests."

In a representation that accompanied the copy of the signature campaign submitted to the governor on Friday, the APYC claimed that that the majority of the people in the rural areas wanted that the panchayat elections be conducted this year.

Seeking the governor's intervention, the APYC condemned the Pema Khandu government for "attempting to buy time and taking the rural mass for granted on the pretext of working on the two-tier modalities.

"It is mere delaying tactic by Pema Khandu government for selfish MLAs' interests," the APYC said.
