Granting of Scheduled Tribes (ST) status opposed

GUWAHATI, July 13: The Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organization of Assam (CCTOA) asked the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to convene a tripartite meeting involving the State government with the CCTOA to discuss the granting of ST status to six communities of Assam. This was said by the Chief Convener of the CCTOA Aditya Khaklary in a meeting held in Guwahati on Friday. During the meeting, Khaklary strongly opposed the granting of ST status to the six demanding communities - Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Moran, Motok, Chutia and Adivasi who are currently in the OBC category. CCTOA, the umbrella body of various tribal groups of the state will convene another meeting on Saturday in Guwahati involving numbers of intellectuals to discuss the issue.
