GS Road Dividers - Boon or Bane?

GUWAHATI: It is always good news when the government oversees renovation works in the city, but what serves as an eye-sore is unplanned construction. A long divider, all the way from Ganeshguri to ABC is under construction. The sturdy dividers will aid in smoothening traffic conditions. However, the planning in the construction of the divider overlooked a major problem: there are no safe crossing zones for miles between the dividers.

“The dividers are built high to prevent people from crossing the road, but with a difference of almost two stops before safe crossing zones, people are bound to leap over them. This will lead to more accidents and road causalities,” a Guwahatian commented.

The construction of dividers has overlooked the convenience of the commuters. People will have to walk for miles to get to the other side of the road. Young people might still do it but what about the elderly? How will they walk so far just to get to the other side?” a shop owner in Christian Basti questioned.

However, according to some, this will actually prevent accidents as people will now walk and cross in a systematic manner without distressing running vehicles. It waits to be seen whether these newly constructed road dividers proves to be a boon or bane.
