GUWAHATI, July 3: Sensing the urgent necessity of educating people on laws in the shortest possible time Gauhati University has introduced a postgraduate diploma course.

The course aims at imparting knowledge of fundamental and functional aspects of law associated with administrative, social, personal and other relevant areas.

“It is a capacity-building course for working professionals and the general public. This course will, for example, help a person understand what to do if they are summoned by police for some reasons,” a faculty at Gauhati University told The Sentinel.

The postgraduate diploma in basics of law will have a duration of 12 months covering two semesters. But students will have the option to exit the course with a certificate in basics of law after having successfully completed the first semester in six months.

He said the diploma course is being taught by the guest faculty on basic principles of law with examples so that anyone can use the knowledge in daily life.

The university has designed the class schedule in a flexible manner. Classes are being held on Friday and Saturday in the evening and the class timings are adjusted according to the requirement of professionals.

Seminars, workshops and interactive session with law experts will be part of the course. Several retired judges have agreed to teach. Rights, cyber laws and criminal laws will be covered.
