Gauhati University to rename four academic buildings

GUWAHATI, July 19: Following the demands raised by Gauhati University’s Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU), GU authority is going to rename four academic buildings. According to a source, the New Arts Building will now be renamed as Surya Kumar Bhuyan Bhawan, the New Academic Building as Lakshminath Bezbaruah Bhawan, Arts Building as Dr Banikanta Kakoti Bhawan and the AT Hall will be renamed as Bishnu Prasad Rabha Bhawan.

According to a source, continuous efforts are on to retain the memories of these men of great repute. Moreover, some of the steps taken in this regard include installing their busts at various places across the university in the past. The source added that this month, the executive council - the decision making body of the university - will conduct a meeting with the members of the students’ council and the members will decide on the future course of action to formally change the names of the buildings. The PGSU has also decided to submit a proposal against the government’s earlier decision to name upcoming model colleges after Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
