Silchar: Students of Gurucharan College in chorus joined together and staged support with banners and posters for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Karanjit Deb, a student and joint secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidarthi Parishad (ABVP) Silchar unit, supporting the Bill along with his classmates said, “The Bill is to give protection to the victims of political and religious persecution in the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who have been forced to seek shelter in India.

It is purely on humanitarian ground and not on political consideration or religious sentiment that these victims of partition and persecution have to be given shelter in this country. Otherwise, where should they go?”

Biswajit Dutta, a student of third semester, Science stream, said it is a misconception and misinformation that the Bill is related only to Assam but to the entire country. Under the ambit of the Bill is covered not only the Hindu Bengalis but also Sikhs, Jains, Christians and Parsis. In the meantime, Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister, has made it clear that the burden of the refugees will be shared not only by Assam alone but by the entire country. To protest or oppose the Bill is not justified purely on humanitarian ground, Dutta added.
