Guwahati Airport to be Connected to Six Asian Countries Directly

As per the recent approval received from the Civil Aviation Ministry, from now onwards six South East Asian nations will be directly connected to Assam’s Guwahati through the airways. This new initiative of starting five flights from Guwahati Airport is stated under the Udaan scheme and was proposed by the Assam government.

All the new flights will be introduced in the next three to four months and will fly directly from Guwahati to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Singapore, Bangkok (Thailand), Yangoon (Myanmar), Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Kathmandu (Nepal).

Ravi Capoor, additional chief secretary, Assam industry and commerce department, inviting tenders from airline operators for the introduction of flights, says, “Since flights from Guwahati to the international destinations are not financially viable as of today, we requested the ministry to support the airline operators with financial support as viability gap funding which is being offered under the Udaan scheme for domestic flights connecting less travelled destinations, including some in the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir. The ministry approved our proposal on Wednesday and issued tenders seeking proposals from airlines operators."

Capoor further added, "This is going to open a huge potential to increase trade and commerce between the Northeast and the South East Asian capitals which are closer to us than cities like Chennai or Mumbai.”

Notably, at present there is only one international flight, i.e., Bhutan’s Druk Air flight which flies directly from Paro (Bhutan) to Singapore via Guwahati twice a week. This new inclusion of six new flights in the Guwahati airport will certainly bring a revolutionary change into the airport scenario making conveyance much easier for the passengers.
