GUWAHATI, July 31: Approximately two-year-old terms of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation’s (GMC) Mayor-in Council headed by its Mayor Mrigen Sarania ended on Tuesday. In an event organized in connection with the end of its tenure in Guwahati on Tuesday, outgoing Councilor Balendra Bharali said that lack of coordination among the line agencies like Public Works Department (PWD), Irrigation, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Railway and GMC remained as the primary reason behind the failure of tackling artificial flood in Guwahati city. “However, the severity of the phenomenon has been relatively reduced. Nevertheless, a long term policy framework is still the need of the hour,” he said.

Dwelling in length on various measures stepped up during the tenure, Mrigen Sarania revealed that the revenue generated during the financial year, 2014-15 was Rs 76 crore. Accordingly, the amount was raised to Rs 84 crore in the fiscal year 2015-16 while in 2016-17 the GMC collected Rs 103 crore. Moreover, it collected Rs 94 crore in the year 2017-18.

Further, Sarania said that during his tenure, altogether three solid waste management transfer stations were installed at Athgaon, GMCH campus and another at Sagaon. Another organic waste converter plant was installed at GMCH campus. One bio-methanation plant was installed at Paltan Bazar.

Moreover, Sarania added that six public toilets were constructed at Khanapara, GMCh campus, Bhanagarh flyover, Panbazar, Six Mile, Ganeshguri, Fancy Bazar (MG Road) and Adabari including two bio-toilets at KC Sen Road and Paltan Bazar. Three GMC office buildings were constructed at Lakhtokia, Bhutnath and Dispur Supermarket while four GMC markets were constructed at Ganeshguri (70% completed), Ulubari (60% completed), Beltola (40% completed), Betkuchi wholesale fish market (100% completed as per estimate).
