Guwahati to host Senior National Badminton from Feb 10

GUWAHATI: Galaxies of Indian badminton will be seen in action in Guwahati as Assam Badminton Association is all set to host the 74th Inter State-Inter Zonal and 83rd Senior National Badminton Championship from February 10 in the city. All the top stars of the country like Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, K Srikant, HS Pranoy, B SAI Praneet have already confirmed their participation in the tournament.

Addressing a media gathering the secretary of the Assam Badminton Association Omar Rashid said, “Around 700 players from 39 affiliated units of Badminton Association of India (BAI) will participated in the competitions which would be held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor Stadium and ABITA stadium.”

Among the two competitions Inter State-Inter Zonal championship would be held from February 10. 7 states, including Assam, will participated in the competition which final is slated for February 11.On the same day the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate the 83rd Senior National Badminton Championship. The inaugural function, scheduled to be held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phukan Indoor Stadium, will also be attended by the president of the Badminton Association of India Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Rashid also added: “The icon players like Saina, Sindhu will start their campaign in the open category from pre quarter final stage. The open event would be held in two phases. 14 players would be qualified from first phase and they would be joined by Saina and Sindhu in the Super Draw. The draw would be same for male icon players also which included Pranoy, Srikant and others.”

The championship carries total prize money of Rs 50 lakh.

Apart from Rashid the media briefing was also attended by joint secretary, treasurer and vice president of the Assam Badminton Association Gautam Mahanta, Badan Chandra Bora and Hemanta Singh respectively.
