Gyangbung Rinpoche Becomes New Abbot of Tawang Monastery

Itanagar: Gyangbung Rinpoche on Friday took over the charge as the Abbot of the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The monastery also is known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse in Tibetan means ‘celestial paradise in a clear night’. It is the largest monastery in India and second largest in the world. Gyangbung Rinpoche succeeded Gangkar Tulku Lozang Konchok.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu along with Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju attended the enthronement ceremony of the new Abbot.

Khandu expressed happiness on the enthronement of the new abbot and welcomed him on his new roles and responsibility.

The Chief Minister said the Monpa community is thankful to the role played by the monastery in inculcating peace, discipline and humbleness among the people. He said due to role of religion in society, people are peaceful and the district boasts of a very low crime rate due to which the district has a low presence of policemen numbering less than 100.

Khandu said Tawang Monastery is renowned not only in the State but world over and the enthronement of the new Abbot is a significant world event.

During the occasion, traditional monastic dances were performed by the local monks.
