Hailakandi district reels under floods, over 80,000 affected

Hailakandi, June 15: Hailakandi district reels under flood waters with the three major rivers Katakhal, Dholeswari and Barak maintaining rising trend. According to a bulletin released by the District Disaster Management Authority here on Friday, 82,225 population have been affected in the first wave of floods under four revenue circles viz., Katlicherra, Hailakandi, Lala and Algapur. Altogether 123 villages have been inundated. 1,642 hectare of croplands have been damaged.

55 relief camps have been set up by the district administration accommodating 33,169 inmates. Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan said the officials of the administration and concerned departments are camping in the affected areas and overseeing the relief and rescue operations. Gratuity Relief materials like rice, dal and salt are being distributed among the affected people.

Khan said NDRF and SDRF personnel have evacuated 271 marooned persons. The Deputy Commissioner informed that nine NSKs have been shifted from the flood hit areas to safe locations and NRC documents are absolutely safe. 11 roads are submerged across the district, disrupting surface communication to some parts. Minister for Environment and Forest, Parimal Suklabaidya toured different flood hit areas and took stock of the prevailing situation on Thursday. Hailakandi, MLA, Anwar Hussain Laskar has been visiting the flood affected areas under his constituency and supervising the relief operation.
