Heavy rain triggers waterlogging in Silchar

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, July 2: A few hours of rain results in water logging in many areas of this town. Last night, a little shower brought relief for the residents of this valley who have been suffering from the Sun’s scorching heat for the past few days. The shower though lasted for a few hours, caused problems for the pedestrians who were using the road. Residents of Das Colony, of Rangirkhari area of this town, and its nearby places had to face the problem. A number of street vendors sell their items standing on the roadside.

A light shower makes them leave the place as it becomes flooded. It becomes difficult for them to deal with customers at that time and thus they incur losses. In addition to this, a number of vegetable vendors have to quickly make temporary arrangement to keep their feet dry. A few hours of rain always submerge various areas of the town and the phenomenon has become tural. Conditions of Link Road, Soi Road and College road becomes very pathetic owing to poor draige facilities. Often people have to wade across filthy water that in turn may lead to innumerable diseases.

Owing to this reason, people belonging to the lower strata of the society have to suffer. It is high time that the administration should come up with a positive and permanent solution to this. Many street vendors complain that their problems are often left unheard and their pleas fall on deaf ears. The rainy season may bring relief to some sections of the people, but it surely causes trouble for a large section of people who have to sustain on daily income basis. In cases related to heavy downpour, load-shedding and other tural calamities, the poor folks are the worst-sufferers and this has been continuing since ages.
