Heavy rains cause massive traffic jam in Shillong

From A Reporter
SHILLONG, March 30: As the heaven opens up for the past couple of days, major parts of Shillong on Thursday evening were affected as heavy rains caused traffic jam in the capital city.
Bumper-to-bumper jams hit the busiest junctions in the city including Police Bazaar, Dhankheti, Lower Lachumiere, Don Bosco square, beside other main junctions in the city.
Despite the recent introduction of new traffic arrangements in the city by the police to help ease traffic congestion, there seems to be little progress in dealing with the issue of traffic clogging in the capital city of Shillong, especially during a rainy day.
A senior citizen, while speaking to this scribe, observed the reason for the traffic jam in the city is because of the continuous downpour of rain in last few days, especially during peak hours and when schools and colleges get over.
“One reason for the traffic slowdown in the city is that more number of people, who would otherwise have walked to their destitions tend to use transportation like autos, taxis and buses to avoid getting wet,” he said.
A cab driver, however said many people, who could have used public transport, would opt for their own private vehicles, particularly when it rains to fetch their children from school and this ultimately leads to increase of vehicles in the city streets. When contacted SP City, Vivek Syiem on this issue, he said, “One of the reason for traffic congestion in the city is because vehicles are multiplying day by day in  Shillong, however, the roads remains unchanged.”
