LAKHIMPUR: The issue of a no-confidence motion in North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) against BJP chairman Samiran Konwar has taken a new turn with an order issued by the High Court (HC). As per the order, the HC directed the BJP chairman to prove his majority on November 9 after accepting a petition for hearing which was filed by Congress ward commissioner Anowar Hussain in this regard.

The Congress won absolute majority in the 14-member NLMB in the last municipal election three years ago. As per the mandate, Congress constituted the Municipal Board selecting Anowar Hussain as chairman. But around two years later, Congress lost its majority as one of the Congress ward commissioners, Prasanta Das joined the BJP. As a result of this, BJP was potent enough to prove its majority in the NLMB and constitute the municipal board led by ward commissioner Samiran Konwar.

Later, Prasanta Das came back to the Congress after quitting the BJP and the Congress ward commissioners demanded the Lakhimpur DC to take initiative to let the party form the municipal board again. But the then DC of the district took no action regarding the issue and therefore, Anowar Hussain filed the petition in the High Court. The court has ordered chairman Samiran Konwar to prove his majority on the assigned date. The confusion and anarchy in the municipal board has affected developmental activities.
