Higher education must keep pace with global standards: Governor

JOYSAGAR, June 27: “Looking into the global challenges, the time has arrived to review the ongoing poor scenario of our State’s higher education so as to improve it,” said Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Tuesday while he was addressing a press meet in the Sukapha Bhavan of the Sivasagar DC’s office. Governor Mukhi arrived in Sivasagar on Tuesday with a three-day long programme in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. Governor Mukhi met representatives of various social organizations and discussed many social issues with them. Besides, the Governor also held a meeting with the Union government as well as State government officials and employees on Tuesday and took stock of various projects being implemented in Sivasagar district. Moreover, Prof. Mukhi addressed media personnel on Tuesday evening and briefed about many socio-political, commercial and educational issues and exchanged opinion with the media personnel.

Governor Mukhi said that the government had been giving priority to higher education sector so that Assam could achieve the goal of quality higher education. An important review meeting on quality improvement in higher education has been called by the Governor on July 6 in the Gauhati University complex. The Governor said that Gauhati University, Tezpur University, Dibrugarh University, Assam University and IIT-Guwahati should improve their quality of teaching.

Governor Mukhi also admitted that the teachers of Assam were working in a deprived condition and hence were insecure. This in turn was affecting the learning-teaching process. Now the government has come forward to solve many genuine grievances in the education sector and within a very short period Assam will be counted as one of the most important States of the country having quality human resource management power, said the Governor.

The decade-long insurgency problem had harmed Assam and the State had sufferd due to lack of development possibilities. But now things had changed and the Union government as well as State government were implementing schemes to make Assam as well as the entire Northeast a development hub, said the Governor.

Governor Mukhi on Wednesday visited the Joysagar Civil Hospital and interacted with the hospital authority and also with many patients. He strictly directed the hospital authority to improve the quality of healthcare service and to keep the hospital clean, healthy and beautiful. Later, the Governor visited Sivasagar College in Joysagar where he held an informal meeting with the teaching staff as well as the students. The Governor also visited the historical monuments of Joysagar and Gaurisagar and also visited the historic Shiva Dol of Sivasagar town on Wednesday. He will visit Charaideo district on Thursday with a day-long programme.
