SHILLONG: Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC), chief Hispreaching Son Shylla on Tuesday said Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong does not understand the affairs of the council.

Shylla was reacting to the recent statement of the Deputy Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) that the party will implement the Village Administration Bill (VAB) if it comes to power after the February 27 Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections.

Shylla pointed out that many Himas (Khasi states) already have their own codified laws and only a few are yet to codify their own laws.

“The attempt to make VAB an election propaganda shows that the State’s political leaders do not have the responsibility towards issues afflicting the people,” Shylla said.

The CEM while agreeing that the Syiems (chiefs) of the Himas do have weaknesses and are not able to carry on with the duties expected of them, he said, “In such a situation, there is an act which allows the council to take over control of affairs pending inquiry on the lapses committed by the Syiem.”

Meanwhile, Shylla also said the current members of the District Council who are contesting the ADC polls should be re-elected so that their unfinished tasks can be completed.
