Home Minister James Sangma visits Social Right Activist Agnes Kharshiing at NEIGRIHMS in Shillong

Shillong: Meghalaya Home Minister James Sangma on Saturday met Social Right Activist and CSWO President, Agnes Kharshiing and her fellow member Amita Sangma who have been admitted at NEIGRIHMS in Shillong.

The Home Minister met the family members of Agnes Kharshiing including her brothers John Kharshiing and Francis Kharshiing at the Intensive Care Unit of NEIGRIHMS and the children of Amita Sangma.

Condemning the attack on Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma, Home Minister said that stern action would be taken against those involved in the attack. He has assured all possible assistance to the family of the victims.

“We are taking up the case very seriously and the investigation is on with two arrests having already been made. We will ensure that justice is accorded to the victims,” James said while expressing concerns that such barbaric and cowardly acts of violence will not be tolerated by the Government.

Following the attack on the activists, the Home Minister had cut short his tour and arrived at Shillong to take stock of the situation.

It may be mentioned that the Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) President and Social Activist Agnes Kharshiing and her fellow member Amita Sangma was brutally attacked by some alleged coal mafias in East Jaintia Hills on November 8, 2018.

As per eyewitnesses, she was apparently attacked in the Kong Ong area. The attack on the CSWO President has been confirmed by the Meghalaya Police.

She received severe head injuries and was rushed to a nearby PHC in critical condition. Later, she was referred to NEIGRIHMS, Shillong for better treatment.

Meanwhile, NEIGRIHMS Doctors have confirmed that the leader is still in ventilation and had been shifted to ICU for better monitoring.
