How to Donate Body For Medical Research

Body donation (anatomical donation) is the donation of a whole body after death for research and education. A willing person can donate his/her body after death has to sign his/her ‘last will’ – either on a plain paper or through the legal procedure in the office of the senior sub-registrar/sub-registrar. In both the processes the person willing to donate his/her body (herein testator) will have to give his/her ‘declaration/affirmation’ in the presence of at least two witnesses, one of whom should preferably be the testator’s next of kin or close relative. There should also be another ‘declaration/affirmation’ by the executor, also in the presence of at least two witnesses. The executor cannot be a witness. A body can be donated by handing over the ‘last will’ of the testator after his/her death to the principal/superintendent/head of the department of anatomy of any of the medical colleges.

In Assam, Ellora Vigyan Mancha (EVM) has been engaged in making arrangements for body donation after death. The Mancha has a pro forma for ‘last will’ of persons willing to donate their bodies.
