SHILLONG, July 3: Former MLA of Rambrai constituency KP Pangniang has taken over the reign as full-fledged president of the Hills State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP) after the position was left vacant when Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit resigned as the leader of the party shortly after the conclusion of the Assembly elections which was held earlier this year. It may be mentioned that Basaiawmoit a former MLA of Nongkrem constituency resigned from the position and later Pangniang took over the position as an acting President of HSPDP.

Pangniang after taking over as the president of the party, while speaking to reporters said that his main objective to strengthen and revive the political party not only in West Khasi Hills but across Khasi-Jaintia hills. Admitting that the part at present is encountering a difficult period, he however is optimistic that the party will gain in strength and regain its glory days with the support and hard work of all its members and leaders. It may be noted that the HSPDP which is the oldest regional party in the state did not fare well in the 2018 assembly polls as only two of its candidates managed to attain victory while even its then president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit lost from Nongkrem constituency. “We will try to bring back all our previous members and leaders who have left the party and discuss with them to have a common understand with a sole objective and that is to once again strengthen the HSPDP party,” Pangniang said.
