Humanity ashamed: Woman becomes social outcast

TANGLA: An incident reported at Kalaigaon in Udalguri district has ashamed humanity raising questions on the conservative mindset of the society.

According to reports, a Hindu widow has allegedly been mentally harassed and isolated by villagers for visiting her Muslim son-in-law. Padumi Saikia, an inhabitant of 2 no. Kalaigaon, after visiting her daughter and son-in-law, was allegedly made to perform ritual purification under the guidance of a priest and the villagers of two societies had imposed fine of Rs 2,000 each along with arranging feast for the people of the two villages. The neighbouring temple where the widow regularly prayed has also been locked up for ritual purification. The daughter of the widow had asked her mother to come to their place in Guwahati for medical treatment of her mother’s fractured hand, following which the mother was charged by villagers.

The incident has psychologically traumatized the woman and created strong resentment among the people of the region. Various organizations, including the Asom Jatiyatanadi Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Kalaigaon unit, have condemned the incident in strongest terms and have exhorted the police and district administration to take cognizance of the matter.
