Hunger Strike By Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport Employees

GUWAHATI: Along with airports elsewhere in the country, the Airport Authority Employees’ Union (AAEU) started a three-day hunger strike at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, Guwahati on Monday in protest against the proposed privatization of airports.

Union Cabinet took a decision to privatize six airports of the country, including LGBI Airport. The hunger strike was staged nationwide on Monday under the banner of the Joint Forum of Unions and Associations of AAI. AAEU regional secretary Pabitra Das said that as per the laid down parameters of the MoU between Government of India (GOI) and the AAI, the Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) is discharging its functional responsibilities, and project performance is monitored periodically by the government.

PPP model causes denial of job opportunities to SC/ST/OBC category people as no reservation policies of the government is adhered to by private companies. “AAI has always kept reservation of posts for the SC/ST/OBC category people as per Central Government guidelines,” said Das. As private airports are expensive and “not efficient in any manner”, Das said, “They are the killer of growth in the aviation sector.” The hunger strike is to continue till December 12. It will be followed by mass casual leave on December 28.
